Rocky Patel Edge

When was the last time I smoked a Rocky Patel cigar? God, it was ages ago. What's weird is that I used to smoke these all the time. Wonder why I lost interest in the brand?

Anyhow, lately I've been trying to smoke some of the cigars that have been aging (collecting dust) for a while in my humidor. This Rocky Patel Edge has been in there forever, maybe longer, good candidate for my Sunday afternoon.

So what did I think? Well, the cigar is wrapped pretty firmly, kind of feels like a little stick of wood, surprisingly after lighting it up though, the burn and draw were perfect, no issues at all.

Taste-wise, it was OK, medium to full-bodied and a nice amount of smoke on every puff. Started out kind of lackluster, but finished very well; last third of the cigar was excellent.

Would I recommend this cigar? Yes and no. For me, no, but that's just because I prefer a sweeter cigar, but for others this might be just what you're looking for: rich full taste, nice draw, not overpowering, and a reasonable price. I've got a friend who loves these.

Don't let the dull, weathered, hard as rock wrapper detour you from trying one of these at least once, you might be surprised...

Toraño Cigar Event at the Lit Cigar Lounge

A few photos from the Toraño Cigar Event up at the Lit Cigar Lounge:

When I got home and loaded the event photos onto my computer, I thought to myself: Is this all the photos I took?!! Holy Sheet-O, I can't believe that I didn't take any shots of Kirkland's No.1: Señor Chris and the gang! Sorry about that my friends, I totally spaced. You were sitting right behind me too. Jeez, just fire my ass!
Anyway, I thought the event went pretty well. I bought a box of Carlos Toraño Master cigars, which I love, and of course they gave me a boatload free-stuff, including at nifty new baseball cap - very nice!

Skipping ahead: At the conclusion of the event, if you had bought a certain amount of cigars you were entered into the drawing for a new Toraño Travel Humidor - very nice prize! Lots of people hanging around to see if they were going to win it.

Anyway, remember I told you a few weeks back that my friend had won $15k at the slots one night. Well, guess who won the humidor. Yep, he is the luckiest guy I know. Well, at least he's one of them. Congrats again Walt! That was pretty neat you winning the big prize - you're on a roll my friend!

Little side note: inside the travel humidor were a bunch of cigars. Walt being the gentlemen that he is, was nice enough to distribute all the cigars in the humidor to his friends at the table. Nice touch!

My thanks to Josh and the crew at the Lit, and to my dear friend Alex with Toraño for putting this event together for us. It's events like this that bring the cigar community together, expose us to new products, and most important: Get us a great deal on cigars! Thanks a million guys!

So I wanted to take a photo of the Cohiba humidor that the Lit Lounge is going to give away as soon as all the Cohiba Capa Reserva 2011 are sold. God, it's beautiful and I have just the place to put it in my house. Yes indeed I bought one of the select cigars on Saturday night. To my surprise it actually turned out to be a pretty damn good smoke too!

Anyway, the only way to win the humidor is to buy a cigar, so you better do it quick, because those babes are going fast. Hopefully Walt and Chris won't buy one - if they do I might as well forget about winning anything. They're soooo lucky...

Help See HB1683, the Cigar Bar and Cigar Lounge Bill Become Law!

Dear Rain City Cigar customer,

As you know, we have been working very hard to change the state smoking ban so as to allow the return of Cigar Bars and Cigar Lounges in cigar stores. We have talked with you extensively about it and said that when the time for action came we would let you know.

Representative Ross Hunter, chair of the House Ways & Means committee was given some bad information on HB 1683, the CIGAR BAR legislation. The opposition conducted a telephone poll in December that resulted in a claim that 71% of voters oppose a change to the voter approved 2005 Clean indoor Air Act.

The problem is the question asked has no resemblance at all to the proposed legislation. As you may have guessed, the question was highly misleading. In fact had I been contacted with this question and was uninformed about the proposed legislation, I would have sided with them. Perhaps, if they had gone one step further and suggested the legislation allowed smoking in schools and churches they may have received 100%!!!

The question posed was:
There is a proposal to change Washington's clean indoor air law and allow cigar smoking in dedicated areas of some stores, restaurants, and bars. In general do you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose, or strongly oppose this change to the state's clean indoor air law?

The legislation in HB 1683 does not allow for an open season on public smoking. Rather it allows for only dedicated cigar bars, and cigar lounges in retail tobacco stores. It does not allow for smoking in stores, restaurants or bars as was stated. HB 1683 provides for tobacco licensing standards, a limited number of dedicated cigar venues; state of the art clean air systems, employee protection provisions, and it will add millions to Washington State revenues.

Please contact Rep. Ross Hunter, by email or by telephone
360-786-7936 and urge him to reconsider the facts and to pass HB 1683.

Also if you would please copy Rep. Reuven Carlyle, the prime sponsor HB 1683, to show that his efforts to pass this legislation are appreciated and supported. Reuven's
e-mail is or by telephone 360-786-7814.

Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter.

With kind regards,

Joe Arundel
President, Cigar Association of Washington

This effort to restore our cigar bars has been underway for some years. Now we are on the threshold of seeing it become a reality. Please take a moment and do your part to help push this legislation across the finish line!

Tabak Especial

Drew Estates Tabak Especial Robusto Negra

This cigar has been collecting dust in my humidor for a while now, I'm assuming that it was included in a sampler-pack that I ordered because I sure don't remember buying it. Not a big fan of flavor-infused cigars, the wifey-poo loves them, but me, well, let's just say that I was curious today.

Anyway, since this stick has been hiding in my humidor since I don't know when, it's looking a little weathered - the label is dull, maybe faded, that oily sheen on the wrapper is gone, and then there's that shaggy foot, which really gives the cigar a rugged, aged look. The one thing that hadn't changed was its aroma. In fact, I've been keeping this cigar separate from the rest of the gang so that the flavor/taste didn't bleed over to my other sticks.

Skipping to the bottom line: Believe it or not, I liked it. Incredibly smooth, nice easy draw, medium-body, and a pleasant sweet taste on your lips. The sweet taste was strong at first, not a nasty type of strong, but strong like: "Wow, what is that? Coffee? Espresso?" Who knows really, but it was different. I bet my lovely wife would flip over these!

What I liked overall was that the sweetness faded away and the full-flavored taste of the cigar came through. Yeah, I was surprised at how good this smoked.

Would I buy one? I'd have to say "Yes". It's pleasantly different and a nice change of pace.

Nice job Drew Estates!

Don't forget this coming Saturday is the Toraño Event up at the Lit Cigar Lounge from 5pm to 9pm. My good friend Alex will be there with some great deals on the Exodus 1959, Master, Loyal and Vault lines.

Perfect timing - I need another box of Masters!

Hope to see you up there!
